John Gardner Dragon

In 1972 author John Gardner in celebration of his famous novel Grendel had a young artist, Fred, create a rendition of Dragon, counsel of Grendel.

The original sculpture was a reddish-golden salt glazed stoneware behemoth over 7 feet tall placed high into a huge silver maple tree adjacent to Gardner's gothic farmhouse.

As the novel follows Grendel through the stages of life, Fred's Dragon sculptures also germinated into new forms of personal expression. The Dragon presented here in white porcelain fierce, consummate yet a small ripple in time embodies the visual manifestation of John Gardner Grendel Dragon.
